I split my week between two clinics:  two days per week I work in Dr. Bourcier’s clinic where we specialize mostly with psoriasis, hidradenitis suppurativa, and atopic dermatitis patients prescribed biologic agents.

Dr. Bourcier has leveled down his practice to part time allowing him more time to participate in conferences and meetings. I am therefore by myself most of the time at the clinic administrating injections, providing support and education to patients as well office duties. I love the flexibility and independence of my role.

The other two days a week, I work at Dr. Lepage’s clinic where we see and care for patients in a general dermatology setting. Working at two clinics I am exposed to many different issues and diseases. This allows me to stay updated and learn on an ongoing basis.

What do you find the most rewarding in your career as a dermatology nurse?

I have been working in Dermatology since 1991 but in between I pursued other interest for nine years. Upon my return to Dermatology, I was amazed that my patients who were treated with phototherapy and topicals were almost all completely healed and well controlled with newer and better treatments. That’s when I acquired an interest in biologics and how they had changed the quality of life for my patients.

I was fortunate to be able to participate in different studies for medications which have now been approved in Canada. I love how our patients return with such gratitude after only a few treatments.

Another part of my job that I love is to be able to travel and attend different conferences, advisory boards and meetings. One of my highlights this year was the Maui Derm conference. I always try to attend the DNA conference; I find it rewarding to be with other Dermatology nurses with the same challenges and interests.

We understand you recently received dermatology nursing certification from the DNCB.  What advice do you have for other members who are contemplating taking the exam?

Just do it! If you take the first step and register to write the exam you will be motivated to study.

Unlike doctors, who often continue their studies and become specialists in their fields, as nurses, we study in various fields but we do not have an option to become specialists in our lines of work. Certification through the DNCB is a way we can demonstrate our advanced knowledge and that we can proudly add to our credentials - RN, DNC.

What do you enjoy doing outside of work?

I love spending time with my family. I have two wonderful grandkids -  a seven-year-old girl, a three-year-old boy and a third one due in February 2020. I have completed my first sprint triathlon this summer. I love the diversity of training in different sports and not just one long distance event.

What career path do you think you would have pursued if you had not become a dermatology nurse?             

My husband is a contractor and I love to see the before and after of each project. I love designing and planning things so designing would have been a satisfying career as well for me.
